New Sub Enclosure
(continued from page 1)
To prepare for
our second layer of mat, we sanded the interior of our new sub
enclosure to remove the rough edges that were created from the
first coat of fiberglass. Even though, this area will not be
seen, sanding does several things for us. Most importantly,
sanding roughs up the surface of the first coat in order for the
second coat to bond well. Secondly, our box was really ugly
inside and we didn't want you guys to think it looked like crap!
It
still looks pretty rough, but who's gonna see it after we put
the front on anyway? The main idea for us is to provide strength
to our 1/2" MDF box and to make it completely air-tight. To
the left is a picture of the second coat of fiberglass while it
is still wet. We ended up with a few small air-bubbles as we
just couldn't get them out. We did work with them to make sure
that the resin mixture was in behind them, though. A few of the
rough looking areas are also where the fiberglass mat bunched up
or was folded over. There were so many angles in this box that
we had a hard time making the mat lay down
right. (to be continued...)

Project Rates
We rate the difficulty of
this project, as a whole, a 3 out of 5. It has taken us a good
bit of time to cut the MDF to fit and make sure it is tight. The
fiberglass is not too difficult in this application. We can see
where it would be more difficult if it had to "look
pretty". Since the 'glass is more for structure than
anything, we are pleased with the project. |
